Our Itinerary …
2005 Itinerary
Our group will be travelling in Australia and New Zealand from Friday, June 3 until Sunday, July 3, 2005. Our very general itinerary is as follows:
Friday, 3rd June
- Depart early evening from Phoenix to Los Angeles, then on to Brisbane
Sunday, 5th June
- Arrive in Brisbane around 6 a.m.
- Bus to Hervey Bay (5 hour drive)
- Arrive at Scrib Hill sometime during the afternoon, set up camp
- Meet up with Gail and Charles Farran
- Pick up two 4X4 rentals
Monday, 6th June
- Full day at Scrib Hill
- Explore Korrawinga Farm and surrounding area
- Group meetings to prepare for trip to Fraser Island
Tuesday, 7th June
- Ferry ourselves & vehicles to Fraser Island
- Set up camp and choose individual assignments for next four days (includes cooking, clean-up, camp projects, etc.)
Wednesday - Saturday, 8-11th June
- Four full days at Aboriginal camp on Fraser Island in the company of two Aboriginal guides from the Korrawinga community
- Journal writing, art & service projects, touring, play time, cooking, clean-up, storytelling & singing around the campfire at night
Sunday, 12th June
- Ferry back to Hervey Bay
- Return vehicles
- Evening at Scrub Hill
Monday - Thursday, 13-16th June
- Four full days at Scrub Hill. Activities include:
- Art projects
- Dance demonstration
- Aboriginal artifacts demonstration
- Basket weaving
- Soap making
- Bushtucker walk
- Campfires
- Sharing stories
- Individual exploration and interaction with community members
- Some visits to town for laundry, shopping & meals
Friday, 17th June
- Leave by bus for Brisbane
- Bus to Sydney
Friday - Sunday, 17-19th June
- Rendezvous Stafford Hotel, Sydney
- Free time for shopping, exploring Sydney, dining out
Monday, 20th June
- Depart Sydney for Wellington
- Clear New Zealand customs
Monday - Tuesday, 20-21st June
- Duxton Hotel, Wellington
- Te Papa Museum
- Group activities and exploration time
Wednesday, 22nd June
- Rent 2 vans and trailer
- Drive to New Plymouth, Taranaki region
- Unpack in Maori boarding school where we'll be staying
Thursday - Saturday, 23rd June - 2nd July
- Maori cultural activities
- Several Marae visits
- Museums, art galleries
- Morgan's Rock Shop
- Flax weaving
- Visit to Maori radio station
Sunday, 3rd July
- Drive to Auckland
- Depart Auckland at 9:45 p.m.
- Arrive in Phoenix (before we left Auckland, effectively, due to the time change)
2004 Itinerary
Donna and Cheryl will be travelled in Australia and New Zealand from Friday, July 2 until Sunday, August 1, 2004. Below is a summary of their trip.
Australia
Friday, July 2
- Depart late afternoon from Phoenix to Los Angeles
- Depart evening from Los Angeles to Sydney
Sunday, July 4
- Arrive early morning in Sydney
- Go through Customs and recheck to domestic
- Depart Sydney to Brisbane
- Bus from Brisbane to Hervey Bay (3 hours north of Brisbane)
- Arrive at Korrawinga Community Center
- Settle into sleeping quarters
Monday — Friday, July 9 — 11
- Korrawinga Community Center
- Work with indigenous community producing arts & crafts
- Work in organic gardens, make soap, learn about bush tucker
- Explore oral storytelling traditions
- Journal exercises: find voice, write personal histories
Friday — Sunday, July 9 — 11
- Afternoon depart for Fraser Island via ferry
- Weekend camping
- Share stories & learn about unique habitat
- Time for playing on beach, relaxation, photography, exploration
Sunday, July 11
- Afternoon depart Fraser Island via ferry for Hervey Bay, Korrawinga Community
Monday — Thursday, July 12 — 15
- Korrawinga Community Center
- Work with indigenous community producing arts & crafts
- Work in organic gardens, make soap, learn about bush tucker
- Explore oral storytelling traditions
- Journal exercises: find voice, write personal histories
Friday — Sunday, July 16 — 18
- Morning bus from Hervey Bay to Brisbane
- Fly from Brisbane to Sydney
- Airport shuttle to Rendezvous Stafford Hotel in Sydney Harbour
- Three days to explore Sydney
New Zealand
Monday, July 19
- Depart from Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand
- Overnite stay in hotel near Auckland airport
- Rendezvous with two students who will join us for the second half of the class
Tuesday, July 20
- Depart from Auckland to New Plymouth
- Settle into WITT University dormitories
Tuesday — Friday, July 20 — 23
- WITT University, New Plymouth
- Work with Maori artists in their studios
- Begin production of digital story
- Finalize creation of book
Saturday — Sunday, July 24 — 25
- New Plymouth
- Explore local area & artist communities
Monday — Friday, July 26 — 30
- WITT University, New Plymouth
- Work with Maori artists in their studios
- Finalize production of digital story, CD, & DVD
Saturday, July 31
- WITT University, New Plymouth
- Explore local area & artist communities
- Digital Storytelling premiere for WITT students, faculty & staff
Sunday, August 1
- Depart from New Plymouth to Auckland
- Depart from Auckland to Los Angeles
- Go through Customs in Los Angeles
- Depart from Los Angeles to Phoenix
